VITUS GROUP ENSURES 177 UNITS OF ST. PAUL-AREA APARTMENTS REMAIN AFFORDABLE
Developer plans comprehensive renovation focusing on health & wellness of residents
OAKDALE, Minn. -- Vitus Group, a national developer and owner of affordable housing, announced the preservation and planned renovation of Century North Apartments at 4131 Geneva Ave. N. in Oakdale, Minn. The 177 units will remain designated affordable for the next 20 years. An extension of the Housing Assistance Payment contract with the Department of Housing and Urban Development will ensure residents will not pay more than 30 percent of their household income on rent.
“Vitus Group is excited to have preserved Century North, a community asset of Minnesota. Our local managing agent, architect and general contractor have made our first efforts in the state virtually seamless,” said Vitus Group development director Scott Langan. “By the end of this year, Century North residents will see their homes improved, and the community assured that this vital resource will remain affordable for many years to come.”
The Century North renovations will include active design elements that encourage physical activity and provide residents with opportunities to make healthier choices. Plans include a focus on upgrading the outdoor recreation space, with a gazebo, children’s playground and adjacent exercise equipment for adults. Improved outdoor lighting, landscaping and bicycle storage will improve safety and encourage pedestrian activity. The raised gardening beds will offer community gardening opportunities for residents to grow fresh fruits and vegetables. The project was made possible in partnership with Citi Community Capital.
As one of the first affordable housing developers, Vitus Group has committed to the Partnership for a Healthier America (PHA) to build healthier communities across the country by incorporating active design elements into at least 80 percent of its future projects. PHA, headed up by honorary chair Michelle Obama, works with the private sector to make the healthier choice the easy choice. Vitus is also working with the Center for Active Design for technical support in planning the onsite features for specific communities and properties.
